What exactly are Chu-Bops some of you may be asking? Chu-Bops were packs of record-shaped bubblegum that came housed in a small 3 X 3 inch replica album cover.
Chu-Bops were introduced in the 1980 's by the Amural Products Company. The first series they produced, consisted of eight different rock and soul album covers by assorted artists including The Knack, Pat Benatar, Rush, The Spinners and Abba. Each miniature album had a song lyric (usually the biggest hit) printed on the back side. Once opened, each "Bop album" included the lyrics to a hit song, and pictures of the artist.
Each 3" X 3" inch mini album had the picture of a large sized L.P. and came in several individual collector sets and each "Bop" had a number on the back of the album so the collector could populate their collection more easily. Some people ate the gum and threw away the cover, some had the insight to hold on to them in thier original shrink wrapped condition.
They also had a detachable flap that was an order form for mail order offers from Amurol. At that time these "Bops" were selling for 29 cents each. Today they range from $5.00 to upwards of $12.00 each.
Amurol also released a single set of six different "Chu-Bops" in the European countries as a test of the foreign markets. "Chu-Bops" also went by the name of "Hit Pops" and "Chu-Pops" and were test marketed in England, Japan, Netherlands, Finland, Denmark and Norway. Sales flopped and the project failed and were rapidly phased out never to be produced again.
